Well this year has been one unforgettable year. From beautiful photo shoots in the mountains in the Spring, chasing and capturing one of the deadliest tornadoes on record to finding the love of my life and getting married. My photography and videography got a boost as my video work and photo made it to CNN and other broadcast markets, newspapers across the Southeast this year during the Tuscaloosa Tornado event. Sometimes I wish I had never seen what I saw that day.
2011 saw some decent lightning shots this year but not as many as I would have hoped for. EMS work and photography work was been good and out of the blue this year I found someone that was so unlike anyone I had ever met. Kept everything under wraps, no Facebook updates etc etc.. so it was no small surprise to everyone when I announced I was to be married. Cant wait to get some chase time in next year and some road trips to get some photo work in. Going to really push to grow my photography business in 2012 by getting out of my comfort zone. Yes 2011 was an unforgettable year, make you wonder what 2012 holds in store for us.

Taking my new bride to this location. Given the choice of any location I have shot I promised I would take her there. She chose this spot nestled in the mountains near my hometown in Alabama. So in a couple days we shall stand there together and shoot pictures...Merry Christmas everyone..!!

Sorry for the delay in updating. Have been swamped here at home or should I say setting up home. Entering my second week of being one of the married and I am loving it. so much nicer when you find the right one. W have put of our trip for now as its taken longer than we though in moving things into our new home. Looking forward to some time on the road but it may be a Springtime photo shoot before I can get some real serious camera time in. We will be sneaking off for a few days next month to visit family and show my love the place where I grew up and some of the locations I have shot. Session work is starting to get busy and that at least gets a camera in my hand. Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday..!!

Up until now it's always meant a journey of a single soul. A few weeks from now it will change to mean a journey of two souls. The Wayfarer will no longer explore the beauty of the world alone. I am to be married in a few weeks. Finally someone to share my world of wonder and to journey by my side...

The central receiving location was The First Baptist Church of Williams, located just northwest of Jacksonville Alabama. Everyone from victims to work crews to law enforcement were fed. It was an honor to help and it really helped me as I have been troubled greatly by not being able to help the day of the tornadoes. Helping another in need. this is my home state and county. Once strangers but now friends....

4 days of delivering donated supplies to various locations to help out with the relief effort in Alabama. One of the tornadoes hit the county I was born and raised in. It destroyed numerous homes as well as lives. Was an honor to help in this effort. Made some wonderful new friends! Even ran into my 6th grade math teacher, whom I haven't seen since 1980! Will take a while to heal and rebuild, but it will happen...

Ghost Out 2011 "Dont Drink And Drive"

(This is the first cut of this video. When the final edit is done I will post it as soon as I can.)

I had the honor of being the photographer on this event. My Ems service sponsored this "Ghost Out" event a couple of weeks ago in Zebulon Ga. It is done there at the high school with everyone in attendance. It is concerning drinking and driving and portrays a two vehicle accident that involves teenagers and a family. Some make it, some don't and the "Grim Reaper" is there to collect whom he will. The teenagers dressed in white in the background represent teens that are killed everyday due to drinking and driving. They are not allowed to talk, text or communicate in any way with anyone while at school for that day, as they are "dead." This event involved several departments from local first Responders, Fire, Law Enforcement, Emory Air Flight from Atlanta and my Ems service, Mid Georgia Ambulance. It shows how a scene is worked from the time it occurs until the victims are removed and taken away. If you have children, please let them watch this. At one point I had to stop shooting and walk away, tears streaming down my face. I am an EMT-I and have seen things I wish I hadn't and this still slammed me very hard.

Took these pics this past Fall in Columbus Ga while doing some company photo work. Was done for the day, so I eased on down to the river. Cotton mills used to line the banks of the Chattahoochee river here..Now only a few buildings are left standing and access isn't easy as its all on private property or overgrown with vegetation...Zoom lens is about the only option.

The colors were beautiful, but I had to hunt them down over a large area. After working the area over I drove across the northern part of the state. colors were already gone or fading. I am back home after only 3 days on the road. Its a blessing to capture these moments this time of year..Cant wait til spring now!

Just read a report from the Georgia Forest Commission concerning the leaf colors this year. While still beautiful I don't think I will find the colors I did last year. I was asked to shoot for a local magazine today. The subject was nothing short of a absolute "Angel". She is a very courageous young lady as she has a condition that's inoperable and is now back at home spending her remaining time with her family and friends. As a photographer I have covered a wide variety of subjects but never anything of this magnitude or of a personal level. It was an honor to do this assignment and with the gracious permission the family, allowed me to post these very intimate pictures of Jazmin for a celebration of her life. The magazine will be published soon and I will link to it from here...As an EMT I deal with death from time to time but with children its never easy regardless of the situation..As I sat there, taking pictures, the writer interviewing her, her voice barely above a whisper, she answered questions as best she could. Me, behind the lens, looking into her eyes and fighting back tears as the camera snapped moments in a life that will be unfairly shortened. But when she flashed a smile at me during the shoot it seemed to say "don't worry, everything will be alright"...Even in sadness there is comfort found....Please keep this family in your prayers...

Sorry for the huge delay in posting pictures..My Fall road trip is all planned and ready though. "Planned" meaning I haven't a clue where I am going or a destination in mind. I do know the direction and that being north to the mountains of Georgia and North Carolina. Five days of roaming back roads. This hopefully will be kicking off on Halloween. More photo work awaits as well as three weddings by years end. Going to be a very busy end of the year for me and I am very happy. October is my favorite month, cooler weather is here, getting chilly at night with pleasant afternoons.

We also have a new addition to the family..

Meet Ziva..A stray puppy that wandered up to our home. She won me over with that goofy grin. A good scrubbing and hot meal and she was ready for a nap. As I blog here tonight she is lying on my bed.. sound asleep...

After the fiasco of a "vacation" I have to sit and wait and wait for Fall to get here. Not sure when i will be going on the Fall shoot as it depends on when the leaves begin to show some color. We have pecan leaves already falling here at my place. The overnight lows have been in the mid 50's in the higher elevations and lower 60's in the lower parts. This will get everything started up. Not sure of the quality of leaf color this year, but regardless we are heading out and into the mountains for some relaxation and photography. I plan to fully enjoy myself this time around. the new "mid life crisis" is ready to roll....

Well I was able to get on the road arrive at my destination and then come down with a nasty cold, thus forcing me to cancel my vacation and come home. Yes this really does stink! Its a long time or so it seems until Fall gets here but I guess I will have to wait. I did manage a few pictures yesterday before the fever got to much for me and i had to return to my hotel room for some medicine. After a rough night of tossing and turning in bed with a fever I felt better the next day. I was torn about leaving and almost stayed. The water levels were to low on the river for a kayak trip and I didn't want to get my friends sick with the cold, so I chose to return home. I made the right choice because as of this moment the cold has returned with a vengeance and brought a low fever with it. Here are some of the pics I took while roaming around ....Enjoy!

Hannahs Mill Pt 2...

Photos of the upper dam just up from Hannahs Mill in the previous post. This is the site of another cotton and grist mill although the only thing that remains is the stone dam. While shooting I heard a friendly and familiar voice and turned to see Mr McDonald, owner of Hannahs Mill down creek and also owner of this dam as well. He stopped by to chat and fill me in on the history of this dam. Built around the same time as Hannahs Mill in 1858 and used a waterwheel for power..It was good to see him again and I thanked him for allowing me permission to shoot from his property...

Still on the road with company portrait work. I took some time after finishing up for the day to visit a local landmark of sorts. Built in 1858 and has been owned by the same family since 1931. It was operational up until 1978 and is listed in the historical places of Georgia. It is the last surviving grist mill out of 11 mills that once thrived in the area. It operated with a water turbine and not a water wheel like most mills did. All the original milling equipment is still inside the building. It stands on private property and many many thanks to the McDonald family for allowing me to venture onto their property and take the pictures and also passing on the history of this mill. Not many people are allowed to visit it anymore so I am very honored to have done so..

My workload has been added to and extended into late August now. It will almost be September by the time I have finished up photo work for my company. The good thing about all this is that road trips are just around the corner. September is set aside for one more kayak trip and awaiting that first cold front that brings the nip of Fall weather to the mountains. I plan a scouting trip ahead of the main trip in the Autumn colors in November. Can almost feel the cool breeze looking at the pic above...Might even try and get out and shoot a few pics next week while in western Georgia, near Thomaston provided it isnt blazin hot..

Back home to work a couple shifts and then its back on the road again. While at my hotel a severe thunderstorm rolled in. Me, of course, just had to hang out on the balcony and try and catch lightning pics. This resulted in my almost getting struck as one hit about 2oo yards away..Close enough I could feel the static in my hair..no time to react and Boom! Sounded like a mortar round going off..The things I do for lightning shots...

Been on the road with some portrait work for my company. I have been instructed to rephotograph the entire company, roughly 213 employees located at various cities across Georgia. This will take up the rest of month, but it will be a nice escape from the world of emergency medical treatment. These shoots are the closest I will ever be to living the life of a full time photographer, so I look forward to them when I have the chance. It also helps finance my photo road trips each year...

For the next week and a half I will be on the road shooting portraits for my EMS service. Same thing I did last year and I really enjoy it. Extra money comes in handy as the real facts of life draw near..needing new eyeglasses, truck insurance as well as new tires, etc etc..The real unglamorous but real needful parts of life I suppose. But the good thing is that this will enable me another road trip in the future. May wait until late summer before heading out as its just to hot to lug camera gear around and with the hazy skies pictures don't look that great. For now I am just living the dream!

As much fun as I had on my little get away last week there is still something missing. While I didn't take very many shots I got to relax and still had a great time but I am not able to shake this restlessness that has plagued me since last year. I have some photography work for my EMS service this month so that going to consume the vast part of this month. I was due to take off again the very last week of June for an "official" vacation but have decided not to for now. Those pesky items like eyeglasses and tires for my vehicle have priority for now....but still there is a yearning inside.

In the end, the yearning always wins..

....In North Alabama enjoying some relaxation. Last day tomorrow will be spent riding some roads and shooting pics as I feel like it..Have kayaked 14 miles over the lat 2 days and called off the third trip as I am tired and pretty well sunburned. But its been a great few days off. The live stream video worked well and I had several friends log in and chat at me while watching my trip..Hope to have some pics to show for it. I took several pics with a cheap waterproof camera while on the river..Get those up when I can..

Had some storms last after sunset and I began to shoot them while they were almost 40 miles away. I used two cameras at the same time, jumping back and forth adjusting then when needed and it kept me pretty busy. The golden toned shots are from my 40D Canon. The others are from my Canon XSi. I love the variety of colors. Enjoy!!

Everyone seems to be live streaming these days. I have several friends that have small web cameras that streams their weather chasing adventures. I decided to have a little fun this year and try a different angle on it..
This year I am going to attempt to live stream one of my road trips. The plan is to stream the journeys along the back roads and places you see in the pictures of my blog. Hopefully it will be like you're riding along with me. On the 27th of May I plan to go kayaking with friends in northern Alabama and this will be a dry run to see if it works. If all goes well it will be used again on my scouting trip in late June...

Sorry for the lack of updates. Between work and just being in a funk its hard to get the motivation up. Road trip in 2 weeks, but its more of a relaxation time with kayaking thrown in. Some photography but ot going to be running the roads as much. Another trip will be in late June and that will be my scouting trip. Still havent picked out an area to go to this year, sounds like a adventure in the making...

Photography work load is increasing. The good news is that its the kind I actually make money doing! Cha ching! More EMS pics from around the state have been ordered up and I cant wait. Spring is off to a fine start as the colors are beautiful. The Pecan trees are almost fully bloomed out and grass cutting is now a weekly chore..Gotta love it!!

Had some session work to do this past weekend. Kristina was great to work with. Those eyes just look right through you.. Road trip is being pushed back a little as I have decided to get my 72 Toyota Landcrusier restored and thus "fun money" is being diverted towards it. But we do have one planned. Also well be back on the road shooting again for my EMS service.. Busy time for me but its worth it..

Beautiful and quiet morning. Waiting for her to appear above the horizon..

Finally she lifts high enough for us here in South Georgia to see her. (approx 250 miles away)

At this point she was off the North Carolina coast (approx 400 miles away) and still accelerating. Lost sight of her right after this pics was taken as she passed below the treeline.

Even the Air Force was out enjoying the afternoon. If you click on the pic you can make out the "sharks teeth" on the noise of the aircraft. This squadron is a decendant of the Origianl "Flying Tigers" from WWII. Glad to have them nearby at Moody AFB.

One of the hazards of running around shooting pics ..Succeeded in getting my truck stuck. Luckily I was near home and a cousin of mine drove over and pulled me out. Glad I wasn't far away from home!..
